Free vehicle-affordability calculator
How much should I put down on a car?
Auto Down Payment Calculator
The cash needed to reach a target auto-loan payment depends on the vehicle price, trade equity, rebates, taxes, fees, interest rate, and term. Enter the maximum payment you are willing to model, and this calculator estimates the down payment required to keep the financed payment at or below that amount.

What this tool calculates
What will the calculator show?
- Converts a target monthly payment into the maximum loan principal supported by the selected rate and term.
- Accounts for trade equity, rebates, taxes, and financed fees.
- Shows whether the transaction already fits within the selected payment capacity.
- Separates cash down from other transaction credits.
Who this tool is for
When is this calculation useful?
This tool is for shoppers working backward from a monthly vehicle-payment limit to estimate the cash down payment or lower purchase price needed.
Not designed for: It does not determine what a lender will approve, what a dealer will require, or whether the vehicle is affordable within the user’s complete financial situation.
Input guide
What do the inputs mean?
- Vehicle purchase price
- The negotiated price before transaction credits and financing.
- Maximum monthly payment
- The payment ceiling you want the modeled loan to stay at or below.
- Annual rate and term
- The borrowing rate and repayment period used to calculate supported principal.
- Trade-in value and amount owed
- The values used to determine positive or negative trade equity.
- Rebate, tax rate, and fees
- Credits and costs that change the amount requiring financing.
Results guide
What do the results mean?
- Required cash down
- The estimated cash needed after applying trade equity and rebates to reach the selected payment.
- Maximum supported principal
- The loan balance that corresponds to the payment, rate, and term.
- Estimated financed amount
- The transaction balance remaining after the calculated cash down and other credits.
- Unused payment capacity
- Additional supported principal when the transaction already fits below the selected payment.
Calculation methodology
How does the calculation work?
The calculator solves the present value of the selected monthly payment using the annual rate and term. It compares that maximum supported principal with the complete transaction balance after trade equity, rebates, taxes, and financed fees. The difference becomes the estimated required cash down.
Model assumptions
- The rate is fixed and payments occur monthly.
- Transaction values and credits are entered accurately.
- The target payment applies only to principal and interest, not insurance, fuel, repairs, or registration.
- The user independently evaluates whether using the required cash would leave adequate reserves.
Worked example
How should I interpret a result?
If a shopper selects a $500 monthly-payment limit, a 60-month term, and a 6.5% rate, the calculator determines the loan principal that payment can support. It then compares that amount with the vehicle transaction balance to estimate how much cash down is needed.
Important: The example explains the method. Your result depends entirely on the assumptions you enter.
Decision guidance
What should I compare next?
- Compare the required cash down with your emergency savings and other near-term obligations.
- Test a lower purchase price, shorter term, or better rate instead of relying only on a larger down payment.
- Use the auto-loan calculator to review total interest and complete acquisition cost.
Important limitations
What can change the actual result?
The result is not a lender approval or required minimum down payment. Taxes, fees, trade values, negative equity, lender limits, and final contract terms may change the actual cash required.
Use the calculator as an educational comparison tool and confirm material figures with source documents, providers, lenders, taxing authorities, or qualified professionals as appropriate.
