2026 variable-pay tax guide

Why was so much withheld from my overtime or bonus?

An unusually large amount withheld from one check does not, by itself, mean that the extra pay faces a special final tax rate. Withholding is a payment toward the tax calculated for your whole year.

Compare two paystubs

Is overtime taxed more?

Overtime is generally included in taxable wages. Payroll withholding may rise when the check is larger, depending on your Form W-4 and your employer's withholding method. Your final federal income tax is based on the full-year return, including applicable deductions and credits. Social Security and Medicare withholding also generally apply to overtime wages, subject to their rules.

How much overtime is actually mine to spend?

Compare gross pay and take-home pay on comparable paystubs. The difference in net pay is cash you received, but changes in benefits, retirement contributions, other wages, or deductions can affect that comparison. Keep enough cash available for any later tax balance. A paycheck alone cannot calculate your final annual tax.

Why was my bonus withheld at 22%?

For separately identified supplemental wages, an employer may use the optional flat 22% federal income tax withholding method when the conditions in IRS Publication 15 apply. Other methods and the mandatory rate on supplemental wages over $1 million can apply. The 22% is withholding, not necessarily your final federal tax rate. State and payroll taxes may also appear.

How does the 2026 qualified overtime deduction affect withholding?

Eligible overtime may generate a federal income tax deduction for the premium above the regular rate that is required by the Fair Labor Standards Act, often the extra half of time-and-a-half. It does not make all overtime pay tax-free. The deduction is limited to $12,500 per return, or $25,000 for joint filers, with a phaseout above modified adjusted gross income of $150,000 or $300,000 for joint filers. Eligibility and reporting details matter, including 2026 W-2 box 12 code TT reporting. An employer generally does not reduce withholding for it unless you submit an updated valid Form W-4 accounting for the expected deduction. Review the current Form W-4 instructions before changing your withholding.
